The Falerii Novi Project, established in 2021, aims to improve our understanding of the sociohistorical and urban development of this town in South Etruria, 50km north of Rome. The project uses a range of scientific techniques alongside traditional excavation to investigate aspects of its chronology, such as its foundation and abandonment, as well as its relationship to the hinterland, local environment and role within regional trade networks. Guided by preceding geophysical surveys, the project can target individual buildings and urban infrastructure, so far including a macellum (market), domus (house) to the south of the forum, streetside intersection inside the South Gate, and a row of tabernae (shops) on the northern flank of the forum.

The project is conducted through a partnership between the Institute of Classical Studies (School of Advanced Study, University of London), British School at Rome, Harvard University and University of Toronto, with the support of the Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio per la provincia di Viterbo e per l’Etruria meridionale.
