Profile
Maria Cecília de Miranda Nogueira Coelho is Associate Professor of Philosophy at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (Brazil) and former President of the Sociedade Brasileira de Retórica. Her areas of expertise are ancient philosophy (the sophists), rhetoric and tragedy (especially Euripides), the reception of classical rhetoric in the speeches of the Jesuit Father António Vieira, and the reception of Greek drama in cinema. Her current research is focused on the deployment of epideixis and related terms in Plato. This subject is connected to a broader project on image and discourse in Plato and Gorgias. Since her early years of training in philosophy and mathematics, she has a keen interest in patterns of argumentation and demonstration. Her focus has not been limited to the canonical philosophers but Plato have, of course, served as a kind of template to investigate the use of concepts such as epideixis, apodeixis and epideictikos.
