My PhD project aims to evaluate how a digital approach to the handwritten tradition of epigraphy can improve our knowledge of ancient inscriptions and our understanding of the development of epigraphic science. For my research I will focus on a case study: the Novus thesaurus veterum inscriptionum (1739-1742) by the Italian scholar Ludovico Antonio Muratori, paying specific attention to the handwritten sources used by the author and currently preserved in his archive (Archivio Muratori) in Modena (Italy). In particular, I will adopt a methodology that combines a traditional approach with digital technologies, exploring the opportunities offered by Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) techniques and XML TEI standards for establishing a digital connection between the handwritten tradition of epigraphy, the inscribed monuments and some online resources related to epigraphy (for example, epigraphic databases, gazetteers, reproductions of manuscripts).
