Don't Touch My Monument!: A Coro to Understand Together the Resistance to Interventions in Colonial Monuments in the 'First City' of the 'New World'
Danae Peguero-Bueno is a conservation architect and heritage consultant with 16 years of professional practice in conservation and consultancy work across historic colonial heritage sites and buildings in the Caribbean and Latin America. Her PhD in Media, Culture and Heritage from Newcastle University represents a pioneering application of critical approaches to heritage management in the Colonial City of Santo Domingo, the first European settlement in the Americas. Danae's research developed culturally relevant methodologies, such as the 'coro' method, a participatory approach rooted in Caribbean practices, and integrated innovative social media analysis techniques. Danae is currently working on making impact through her research by founding an innovative heritage consultancy addressing critical challenges in heritage management across Latin America and the Caribbean. Through her work, Danae strives to transform traditional heritage narratives, supporting inclusive practices that acknowledge the diverse voices and complex histories often overlooked in colonial heritage sites, thereby fostering a more equitable understanding of cultural heritage in the region.
