J.P. Barron Memorial Lecture
On 3rd October the ICS hosted the 11th and final John Penrose Barron Memorial Lecture. This was a series established in 2009, one year after Barron’s death, to mark his very significant contributions to the Institute and the wider University of London. The series has been organised with the kind support and collaboration of his widow, Professor Caroline Barron, and his daughters. The lecturer was Dr John-Paul Ghobrial of Balliol College, Oxford, who gave a fascinating talk about Eastern Christians crossing the Mediterranean and indeed the Atlantic in the seventeenth century and their interactions with Western Christians, both scholars and religious figures. It built upon Barron’s last and posthumously published book From Samos to Soho, on Joseph Georgirenes, Archbishop of Samos in the mid-17th century. A podast of the lecture will shortly appear here.
