The Institute of Classical Studies in collaboration with Dr Michele Bianconi (Oxford) and Dr Vladimir Olivero will offer two free, online semi-intensive courses in Phoenician. One at elementary level, and a second at intermediate level. These courses are aimed primarily at graduate students and more advanced researchers who will use the language for academic purposes (though not necessarily on dissertation work), but others are very welcome to apply.
As part of the application process you will be required to briefly explain your interest in the course and its potential academic benefits. Successful applicants will be notified shortly thereafter of their confirmed place in the course.
The Intermediate Phoenician and Punic course is designed for those students who attended the Elementary Phoenician and Punic course over one of the last three years. During our first three meetings we will brush up the grammar previously learnt and read together those portions of the Karatepe A that were not covered before (i.e., slabs II-IV), as well as two major inscriptions from the Iron Age Levant. The second half of the course will be dedicated to the Punic linguistic variety, and the students will read inscriptions hailing from a variety of regions around the Mediterranean, including bilinguals and Punic texts written in Greek and Latin script
