History+ Event for Mid-Career Academics

This workshop is a collaboration between the University of Manchester Department of History and School of Arts, Languages and Cultures and the School of Advanced Study (SAS) at the University of London. The event builds on a humanities-wide two-day event for mid-career scholars held at Senate House in 2022 and an online event hosted by the School of Advanced Study in 2023. 

This new partnership format takes disciplinary identity as the starting point for reaching out to other humanities areas. The aim is to identify subject-specific challenges for those at this often tricky career-stage and facilitate collaborations across disciplinary boundaries and institutional silos. The first in this series of events focuses on History and Historians in the wider Humanities context.

The History+ Humanities event in Manchester comes at a difficult moment for Higher Education and we will explore the particular challenges that mid-career scholars face in these times of crisis. The aim is to share information and resources, to offer opportunities for peer-support and networking, and to consider possibilities for moving beyond mid-career. 

Bursaries

The workshop is funded jointly by Manchester and SAS. Participation is free and a limited number of bursaries of up to £100 are available to support travel or to help with other costs (such as childcare) to enable attendance.

We recognize that the term ‘mid-career’ is open to a range of interpretations, situations, and career stages. This event is aimed primarily at academics who have achieved employment stability but have not yet, or have only recently, been promoted to Professor.
