Early Career Research Associates
The Institute of Classical Studies proposes to appoint up to two non-stipendiary Early Career Research Associates for the years 2024 – 2027.
Each position is tenable for up to three years and is open to UK-based researchers in any field of classical studies whose doctorates were awarded no more than five years before the 30th September 2024 AND who are not employed in a university position or similar which has a research component. Those wishing to have a career break taken into account may declare a period of interruption by parental leave, caring commitments, illness, or other circumstances. Research Associates who are appointed to full-time positions at other institutions with a research component during the course of their Associateship will be expected to resign it, so that fresh appointments may be made. These positions are non-renewable. There is no requirement to reside in London.
The positions are non-stipendiary but Research Associates are entitled to claim reasonable research expenses up to a limit of £500 per annum. The following categories of expenses are allowable:
• Conference attendance (fees and travel expenses)
• Research trips (including visits to the ICS Library for those who do not live in London)
• Research training costs
• Research services, such as photography of objects or manuscripts held in international collections, where such photography is necessary for a research publication.
We will not fund professional subscriptions unless a convincing case is made that these are necessary to access essential research resources that are held neither by the Combined Classics Library nor by Senate House Library.
Holders of these positions are also entitled to an e-mail address and access to library resources via the Combined Library. They will be featured on the ICS website with a short account of their current research interests. They will have the opportunity to organize research-based activities at the ICS and to access ICS and School of Advanced Study researcher training. Support and advice for Research Associates is offered by the ICS Director, and other assistance in kind may also be available.
Research Associates are encouraged to participate in the Institute’s academic programme, and are asked to make a minimum of one active contribution to that programme (e.g. organization of an event connected to their research or a networking session) during their Associateship, for which the ICS will offer promotion and facilitation support. Collaboration between Research Associates in relation to this is strongly encouraged.
Applicants should send a one page curriculum vitae, an optional list of publications, and complete the application form which is available for download here.
The deadline for applications is Monday 2nd September 2024. Applications will be assessed by the Research Promotion and Facilitation Committee of the ICS, and should be addressed to director.ics@sas.ac.uk.
Candidates will be notified of outcomes in September 2024. Research Associates will be expected to take up their positions on or as soon as possible after 1 October 2024.
