Through the generosity of Lord Normanby, the Society of Dilettanti is in normal circumstances able to offer annual awards for students of classical studies at a UK University for visiting classical sites and museums in Greece, Italy or the Eastern Mediterranean. The intention is that this should provide an opportunity for those who would not otherwise be able to travel to see and experience at first hand works of Classical art and architecture. Appropriate candidates would be undergraduates planning an independent visit to the Mediterranean in the summer vacation. Those who have received an award from this scheme in the past are unlikely to be successful on a second application.
Scholarships are expected to be up to £1,000. Applicants should give a brief account of their academic career and status, and provide a statement (roughly 500 words) of their reasons for applying, indicating the dates when the travel is planned and how the scholarship would be used.
Applications must not exceed four A4 pages, including the CV and description of proposed travel, and should be sent in PDF format.
Candidates should send their applications by email to the Manager of the Institute of Classical Studies firstname.lastname@example.org. At the same time they should invite two academic referees to e-mail the Classics Manager on their behalf. The closing date for receipt of applications and references is 1 March 2022.
Successful candidates will be asked to submit a brief report on their travels to the awarding Committee.
